Tokyo has a category of café built for listening. The coffee is close to a seat charge; the real fixture is the speaker.
On Dogenzaka in Shibuya, two of them stand in adjacent buildings — with opposite rules.
No talking, no photographs, no phones
Founded 1926. Talking, photography and phone calls are all prohibited.
These are the house rules. No raised voices, photography banned outright, phones on silent and calls taken outside. No outside food.
Open the door and nobody comes to ask how many you are. Sit quietly in a free seat and water arrives, along with the day's programme. Not attending to you is the courtesy owed to everyone else.
To hear it properly
Every ground-floor seat faces the enormous speakers head-on. Say a word to the staff and go up to the front row of the second floor. The two speakers are different sizes.
Scheduled concerts at 3pm and 7pm daily. You receive the programme on arrival.
Founded 1926. The building burned down in the 1945 firebombing and was rebuilt five years later to exactly the same design.
Next door — requests welcome, talking welcome
Founded 1969. The basement is called Japan's oldest live house.
B.Y.G stands for Beautiful Young Generation. The ground-floor café space carries no cover charge; you simply order drinks or food.
There are close to ten thousand records and CDs, and anyone can request a track — the exact inverse of the silence next door.
In 1973 the owner decided there were no bands left worth backing, closed the live house, and ran it as a rental studio for roughly thirty years. It reopened in the 2000s.

Visit both. Hear one piece through to the end at Lion first, then move to BYG to talk. Reversed, Lion's silence arrives too abruptly.

Here the rule is not music but speed. You order and pay at the counter inside, then carry your own tray, so decide while queuing.
It looks permanently full from the street, but go in anyway. By the time you have ordered, something has usually opened up.
