Local Knowledge

Obvious to locals, invisible to visitors

There is a simple reason guidebooks leave this out: to the people who live here it is too obvious to be worth explaining.

Unwritten rule
Founded in 1928

Founded in 1928. The karaage is coated in potato starch rather than flour, which is why it looks white instead of brown. That white karaage is close to a local staple food in Ota Ward — the starch seals the meat fast and traps the juices.

Unwritten rule

The boxes are built on the premise that a bento is portable food: the rice is meant to stay separate-grained as it cools, with the frying oil clinging to it. So those who know the shop eat it at room temperature, without reheating.

Local timing
It opens early, yet by around 11am the queue already turns the corner of the building

It opens early, yet by around 11am the queue already turns the corner of the building, and the popular boxes often sell out before lunchtime proper. The side-dish shop next door has its own separate line — join that one if you only want the karaage. Cash only.

The backstory
Among Tokyo television crews this is a byword for the location bento

Among Tokyo television crews this is a byword for the location bento. Enough on-screen personalities have named it as their favourite that it became a box the country knows by name even without tasting it. Its character is that of working-site food, not tourist food.

What it is

Ota is a ward of factories, Haneda and working-class shotengai. Cash only, and a seating charge on top. Know those two things and nothing will catch you out. Start with a draft or a highball, then ask the owner where to go next. Monday closures are common in this line of business — check especially if you plan an early-week visit. There are a few similar places nearby — do not give up if the first one is full. This is one of those places that beats its photos. People often arrive with low expectations and leave surprised.

What to order

Why locals keep coming

Drink prices are transparent — no surprises at the till, which is what brings people back. The owner works the bar personally, so the quality of conversation is the quality of the place.
