Obvious to locals, invisible to visitors
There is a simple reason guidebooks leave this out: to the people who live here it is too obvious to be worth explaining.
One of the standing bars that made Akabane a byword for getting drunk on a thousand yen. No chairs, so half an hour to an hour then move on — the local rhythm is hopping, not settling.
Chuhai run ¥200–400 and snacks ¥100–350, so a thousand yen genuinely buys three drinks and two dishes. Those prices survive on fast turnover — lingering undermines the whole arrangement.
Pay-as-you-go and cash-only is the norm; a ten-thousand-yen note causes trouble, so bring small ones. The Ichibangai district is dense with these places, which makes bar-hopping easy.
What it is
Kita is a ward known for Akabane's drinking quarter. Orders are taken unhurriedly. Here that is not a lapse in service — it is the design. The coffee is on the strong side — say so up front if you prefer it lighter. After six in the evening the atmosphere shifts completely — pick your hour to match your purpose. If you want photos, just ask first — permission is usually given readily. It would be a waste to stop at just this one — there is more of the same density within five hundred metres.
