시나가와구

1923년 관동대지진으로 긴자의 벽돌 건물이 무너졌을 때, 그 벽돌을 가져와 진창이던 길에 깔았던 상점가가 있습니다. 그 인연으로 '긴자'라는 이름을 붙였고, 이것이 전국에 300곳 넘게 퍼진 '○○긴자' 상점가의 첫 번째입니다. 시나가와구의 도고시긴자입니다.

이 상점가에는 특이한 규칙이 하나 있습니다. '도고시긴자 고로케'는 특정 가게의 상품이 아니라 상점가 전체의 브랜드입니다. 정육점, 반찬가게, 음식점 등 20곳 남짓이 각자의 고로케를 팔기 때문에, 한 곳만 먹고 판단하면 이 거리를 잘못 이해하게 됩니다.

시간대도 중요합니다. 월요일부터 토요일 15시부터 18시, 일요일과 공휴일은 14시부터 19시가 '쇼핑 전용 시간대'로 지정돼 차량 진입이 통제됩니다. 이 시간에 가야 길 한가운데를 걸을 수 있습니다. 그 외 시간에는 좁은 길로 차가 지나다녀 걷는 맛이 크게 달라집니다.

1923年の関東大震災で銀座の煉瓦建築が崩れたとき、その煉瓦をもらい受けてぬかるんだ道に敷いた商店街がある。その縁から「銀座」の名を付け、これが全国に三百を超えて広がった「○○銀座」商店街の第一号となった。品川区の戸越銀座である。

この商店街には変わった決まりが一つある。「戸越銀座コロッケ」は特定の店の商品ではなく、商店街全体のブランドである。精肉店、惣菜店、飲食店など二十軒ほどがそれぞれのコロッケを売っているため、一軒だけ食べて判断すると、この通りを取り違えることになる。

時間帯も重要だ。月曜から土曜は15時から18時、日曜・祝日は14時から19時が「買物専用時間帯」に指定され、車両の進入が規制される。この時間に行けば道の真ん中を歩ける。それ以外の時間は細い道を車が通るため、歩く感覚がまるで違う。

When the brick buildings of Ginza collapsed in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, one shopping street took the rubble and laid it over its own muddy road. On the strength of that connection it took the name Ginza — and became the first of more than three hundred "○○ Ginza" shopping streets across Japan. This is Togoshi Ginza, in Shinagawa.

The street has an unusual convention. The "Togoshi Ginza croquette" is not one shop's product but a brand belonging to the whole street. Around twenty businesses — butchers, delicatessens, restaurants — each sell their own version, so judging the place on a single croquette means misreading it.

Timing matters too. From 15:00 to 18:00 Monday to Saturday, and 14:00 to 19:00 on Sundays and holidays, the street becomes a designated shopping zone closed to vehicles. Go then and you can walk down the middle of the road. At other hours cars thread the narrow lane, and the experience is entirely different.
