에도가와구

1719년, 8대 쇼군 도쿠가와 요시무네가 매사냥을 나왔다가 이 일대의 신사에 들렀습니다. 갑작스러운 방문이라 준비된 음식이 없어, 신주가 떡국에 그 지역에서 난 푸른 채소를 넣어 올렸습니다. 요시무네가 맛을 마음에 들어 하며 이름을 묻자 이름이 없다는 답이 돌아왔고, 마을 이름을 따서 '고마쓰나'라 부르라고 했다는 이야기가 전해집니다.

이 유래는 신사에 전해지는 것이며, 5대 쇼군 쓰나요시가 이름을 붙였다는 설도 함께 전합니다. 또 고마쓰나의 직접적인 전신은 에도 시대의 가사이나이고, 여기에 개량을 더한 데서 비롯됐다는 설도 있습니다. 즉 이야기가 하나로 정리돼 있지 않습니다. 그 사실까지 아는 편이 정확합니다.

지금도 에도가와구에는 고마쓰나를 재배하는 비닐하우스가 있고, 유래를 적은 비석과 안내판이 신사에 서 있습니다. 관광지로 꾸며진 곳이 아니라 주택가 안의 평범한 신사라, 표지판을 보지 않으면 그냥 지나치게 됩니다.

1719年、八代将軍徳川吉宗が鷹狩りに出た際、この一帯の神社に立ち寄った。突然の訪問で用意した食事がなく、神主が餅のすまし汁に土地で採れた青菜を添えて出した。吉宗がこれを気に入って名を尋ねると、名はないという答えが返り、村の名を取って「小松菜」と呼ぶようにと命じたという話が伝わる。

この由来は神社に伝わるもので、五代将軍綱吉が名付けたという説も併せて伝えられている。また小松菜の直接の前身は江戸時代の葛西菜であり、これに改良を加えたことに由来するという説もある。つまり話は一つにまとまっていない。そこまで知っておく方が正確である。

今も江戸川区には小松菜を栽培するビニールハウスがあり、由来を記した石碑と案内板が神社に立つ。観光地として整えられた場所ではなく住宅街の中の普通の神社なので、表示を見なければそのまま通り過ぎてしまう。

In 1719 the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, stopped at a shrine in this area while out hawking. The visit was unannounced and no meal had been prepared, so the priest served a clear soup with rice cake, garnished with a local green. Yoshimune liked it and asked its name; told it had none, he is said to have ordered that it be called komatsuna, after the village.

This account is the one preserved at the shrine, and it is transmitted alongside a rival version crediting the fifth shogun, Tsunayoshi. A separate line of explanation holds that komatsuna descends directly from Edo-period kasai-na, improved locally. The story, in other words, has never been settled — and knowing that is the more accurate position.

Greenhouses in Edogawa still grow komatsuna, and a stone marker and information board recording the origin stand at the shrine. It is not a dressed-up tourist site but an ordinary shrine in a residential district: without reading the signs, you would walk straight past.
