분쿄구

분쿄구는 도쿄대학을 비롯한 학교와 절이 많아, 밤이 되면 조용해지는 구입니다. 유흥가가 발달하지 않은 대신 오래된 가게가 주택가 안쪽에 남아 있습니다. 네즈·야나카 일대는 전쟁 피해가 상대적으로 적어 목조 건물과 좁은 골목이 그대로 남았고, 그 안에 노포가 섞여 있습니다.

이 구를 다룰 때 주의할 점이 있습니다. 여기 노포들은 홍보를 거의 하지 않고, 문 닫는 것도 조용히 합니다. 영업시간이 짧거나 재료가 떨어지면 그날 장사를 접는 곳이 있어, 낮에 갔는데 이미 끝난 경우가 생깁니다. 가기 전에 확인하는 습관이 다른 구보다 더 필요합니다.

이 구에는 도쿄에서 가장 오래된 축에 드는 가게도 있습니다. 에도 시대부터 이어져 온 상호가 '옛날부터 변하지 않는 것'의 대명사로 쓰이며, 그 이름 자체가 에도 속담에 등장할 정도였습니다. 그런 곳이 관광 안내판 없이 주택가 모퉁이에 서 있는 것이 분쿄구다운 풍경입니다.

文京区は東京大学をはじめとする学校と寺が多く、夜になると静かになる区である。歓楽街が発達しなかった代わりに、古い店が住宅街の奥に残っている。根津・谷中一帯は戦災が比較的少なく、木造の建物と細い路地がそのまま残り、その中に老舗が混じっている。

この区を扱うときに注意すべきことがある。ここの老舗はほとんど宣伝をせず、店を閉めるときも静かである。営業時間が短かったり、材料が尽きればその日は終いという店があり、昼に行ってもすでに終わっていることがある。行く前に確かめる習慣が、ほかの区より必要になる。

この区には東京でも最も古い部類に入る店がある。江戸時代から続く屋号が「昔から変わらないもの」の代名詞として使われ、その名が江戸のことわざに登場するほどだった。そうした場所が観光案内板もなく住宅街の角に立っているのが、文京区らしい風景である。

Bunkyo is full of schools — the University of Tokyo among them — and temples, and it goes quiet at night. No entertainment district developed here; instead old shops survive deep inside residential blocks. Nezu and Yanaka came through the war relatively lightly, so timber buildings and narrow lanes remain, with long-established businesses tucked among them.

One caution applies to this ward. Its old shops advertise almost nothing, and they close just as quietly. Some keep short hours, or simply stop for the day when an ingredient runs out, so you can arrive at lunchtime and find it over. Checking before you go matters more here than elsewhere.

The ward also holds shops among the oldest in Tokyo. One trading name, running since the Edo period, became shorthand for "the thing that never changes" and turned up in an Edo-era proverb. That such a place stands on a residential corner with no tourist signboard is Bunkyo in a nutshell.
